A Guinness world record made in Oepping: CHICO & the giant hammock

Rolling hills. Dense forests. And a pretty castle with an arcade from the 17^th century. This is Oepping. Idyllic. Quiet. Comfortable. At first glance, no one would assume that history was made here. And that a world record was set right here. But it is true. In the following post, we’ll tell you exactly what it’ about and what we at CHICO have to do with it.

With a giant hammock in the Guinness Book of Records

It was in 1999. The euro is introduced as book money, there are national elections in Austria and tennis ace Steffi Graf announces her resignation. And in Oepping? There they are working on a sensation: a giant hammock is being built in the CHICO factory. At last, the giant was 12 meters long and 3,8 meters wide. The gigantic hammock can carry two tons and thanks to a chassis, it is moveable. With this giant hammock, we not only caused astonishment in the immediate area, but we also made it into the Guinness Book of Records.

This very first exemplar can still be examined – it’s at our company location in Oepping. In the meantime, other giant of this kind have been added. A few years ago, for example, a few of them went on a promotional tour through Austria and Germany with a barbecue sauce manufacturer and served visitors as comfortable seats to enjoy grilled delicacies. In the district Rohrbach, you can also relax in such a giant hammock on the barefoot path at Gasthaus Lang in St. Ulrich. At the Sonnentor Company in Zwettl in Lower Austria and at Baumkronenweg in Kopfing in the district Schärding, there are other, large unique hammocks for lounging and building castles in the air.

CHICO hammocks are desirable

In addition to the giant CHICO hammock, which made it into the Guinness book of Records, and its successors, the smaller hammocks made in Oepping also get around quite nicely. CHICO hammocks invite you to relax in the Sandburg beach bar in LINZ and were also part of the Bubbledays in the Upper Austrian capital. We have also been equipping the EurothermenResorts – such as the one in Bad Schallerbach – with our chilling products in summer for a few years now. In addition, our hammocks are perfect for reading books in comfort. Therefore, they shouldn’t be missing at the reading festival “StadtLesen”, which has been held in Austria, Germany, Italy and Switzerland in the summer months since 2009. For this we produce our own hammocks in the StadtLesen design. But that’s not all: We have also been able to count celebrities among our customers for years – including the former ski racer Marlies Schild and the organic gardener Karl Ploberger.

Most imposing exemplars in America

As for the largest hammock in the world, ones that are even more impressive have been made across the globe since then. There has been a scramble for first place for years, with the Americans – as with so many things – setting the bar high. The British video game company King Digital Entertainment installed a giant hammock in New Jersey that measures 20 x 10 meters. For the large garden and the small balcony
